Alongside my friends in Media Communications, we collaborated and worked as a team to plan, prep and host an all day exhibit for fellow students at BSU. This entailed research into our chosen theme, creating artefacts and exhibition assets, emailing and organising with external collaborators and successfully hosting an impactful exhibition.
My Sexhibition components:
- Sexhibition Guide Book
- QR Code Cards
- Letter to my younger Self Activity
- Feedback Cards
The purpose of the Sexhibition:
The Sexhibition was inspired by our communal lack of Relationship & Sex Education (RSE) from our time at primary and secondary school. This has shaped our lives, experiences, confidence and wellbeing alongside many other students. We wanted to highlight the lack of RSE in the current school curriculum by showing fellow students the potential for what RSE can be. We had exhibit sections on:
- Contraception & the pill
- Queer Sex
- Getting rid of sexual stigma
- Sexual Anatomy
- Consent & Safe Sex
Whilst highlighting the current lack of RSE, we also wanted to ensure that sex felt like an open conversation to decrease social stigma and the taboo nature of sex related topics. I’m so proud to say that we had many students telling us how they really appreciated how easy it was to discuss these topics with us and the way the exhibit made them feel less scared or apprehensive to address their sexual concerns.
Many students participated in our ‘Letter to my younger self’ activity encouraging students to reflect on what they wish they were taught in school and how this has impacted them as they have grown up. We also received a lot of completed feedback forms from the 48 attendees we had across the day with most of them addressing how they loved the exhibit, appreciated the open and friendly nature of the event and some even asking for us to host the event again!
Collaboration:
Not only did we accumulate artefacts from published books and our own work- we also collaborated with a variety of people and organisations to either portray individual art and projects regarding RSE or to signpost exhibition visitors to external support. We collaborated with fellow BSU students, the Bath Spa Wellbeing Team who were present at the event to explain how they can support students with RSE related matters and the Riverside Sexual Health Clinic who provided us with resources and information on how students can access support and advice in the local area.
The Sexhibition is one of my university projects that I am really happy with and that has taught me many industry-level skills including teamwork, networking, collaboration and event hosting. This experience emphasised to me how much I love event planning and hosting when it is for a good cause.
